About the Organisation
Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia (ALSWA) is currently the largest community based Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander legal organisation in Australia. It provides legal aid services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples throughout Western Australia in accordance with grant conditions imposed by the Commonwealth Department of the Attorney General.
ALSWA provides a 24 hour, seven day a week, custody notification service (CNS) for all Aboriginal people detained in a police facility in Western Australia.
About the Opportunity
Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia (ALSWA) has a full-time opportunity for a Custody Notification Lawyer to join their team.
Reporting to the Managing Lawyer, you will be responsible for providing legal advice and welfare-based services for Aboriginal people detained in custody throughout Western Australia.
Your key responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
- Ensuring that the immediate health, safety, and wellbeing needs of the detained person are identified;
- Working with police, family and other services to ensure welfare concerns are addressed;
- Ensuring all telephone calls on the CNS phone line are answered on a first call basis;
- Liaising with police, family and other agencies as required to explore bail options; and
- Ensuring all aspects of file management and data entry are undertaken in accordance with professional standards.

In exchange for your hard work and dedication, you will be rewarded with an attractive remuneration circa $57,000 - $62,000 for those on a restricted practice certificate and $65,000 - $94,000 for those on an unrestricted practice certificate plus super.
